Thomas Cronen

Thomas J. Cronen formerly of 15 Joseph Road Naugatuck and EPOCH of Brewster passed from this life on August 4, 2012 at his home in Brewster, MA. He was the husband, for the past 62 years, of Malvena (Federonis) Cronen formerly of 15 Joseph Road Naugatuck and EPOCH of Brewster in Brewster, MA.

Mr. Cronen was born in Waterbury, CT on October 15, 1930 the son of the late Cathryn (Corcoran) Cronen and Thomas J. Cronen. He was raised in Waterbury and graduated from Cheshire Academy and the University of New Haven and was a long time resident of Naugatuck.

He worked as a corrosion engineer for the Northeast Utilities Service Company for 43 years before retiring in 1991. He was a lifelong member of the National Association of Corrosion Engineers and a past director of the northeast region. In addition, he was past chairman of the Appalachian Underground Corrosion Short Course at the University of West Virginia. He was also the head of his own consulting firm, Corrosion Protection Testing Service based in Naugatuck.

He was a veteran of the U.S Army during the Korean War and a communicant of St. Francis Church in Naugatuck.

Beside his wife he leaves three sons, Thomas D. Cronen, Steven J. Cronen and David J. Cronen, seven grandchildren and several cousins.

Too often we don’t take time during a lifetime to give tribute to someone we all love and cherish – therefore, here’s to eighty one wonderful years with Thomas Joseph Cronen – Husband, Father, Grandfather, Friend…we all love you, Dad and Granpa.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. from the Buckmiller Brothers Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Ave, Naugatuck to St. Francis of Assisi Church, 318 Church St, Naugatuck for a mass at 11:00 a.m. Burial with full military honors will be in St. James Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday morning from 9-10:30 a.m.

Lisa E. Mason-
Lisa E. Mason, 59, of Prospect passed away peacefully surrounded by her closest friends after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Lisa is survived by her mother, Dorothy Hutt Mason, her childhood friend Judy and Judy’s children Allie and Jeff (her godson). Lisa is also survived by aunts, uncles, cousins and her students. She is predeceased by her devoted father, Edward, and her beloved brother Edward III (Teddy).
Lisa graduated from Naugatuck High School in the class of 1971. Always a competitor, Lisa was a renowned member of the Naugatuck Nuggets women’s softball team. She received an Associate’s Degree from Dean Jr. College, a Bachelor’s degree from UCONN and a Master’s Degree from University of Bridgeport.
After a long successful career as a golf sales representative for McGregor and Reebok, she found her passion and began her teaching career at North End Middle School in Waterbury, CT, where she brought history to life for her students. She also served with distinction as a union representative.
Elected to the Board of Aldermen in 1997, she was a devoted public servant and ever vigilant watchdog for the City of Waterbury. In 1998, Lisa was voted the Best Political Newcomer in a public opinion poll conducted by the Waterbury Observer. She served as a City Plan Commissioner, President of the East End Community Club and was a member of the Board of Directors of Brass City Harvest. After moving to Prospect, she continued her public service as a member of the Board of Assessment Appeal.
She was most known for her sense of style with signature pieces consisting of crisp white shirts, glitter glam glasses, and Gucci shoes. She will be remembered for her wit, depth of knowledge and her ability to clearly articulate her thoughts and opinions. A fan of talk radio, her distinctive voice could often be heard across the local radio airwaves.
A mass will be celebrated in Lisa’s memory Friday, August 10, 2012 at 11:00 at Saint Francis of Assisi Church, 318 Church St, Naugatuck. Burial is private. There are no calling hours and the Buckmiller Brothers Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Ave, Naugatuck is in charge of arrangements.

Naugatuck-Modesto S. Natal, Jr., 66, passed away suddenly in his home on Wednesday, August 8, 2012. He was the widower of Margaret “Peggy” (Stone) Natal.

Mr. Natal was born on August 6, 1946 in Puerto Rico, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Modesto Natal Sr. He was retired from Pratt and Whitney where he worked as a machinist for many years.

He is survived by his daughter, Yvette Brooks and her husband Paul of Naugatuck, his sister, Viviana Maldonado of Puerto Rico, three grandchildren, Sheyana, Hunter and Havana- Sky Brooks. He is also survived by his companion for the past three years, Jodi Avendano.

His family will be accepting family and friends for calling hours on Saturday, August 11, 2012 from 9-11 a.m. at the Buckmiller Brothers Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Ave, Naugatuck. Funeral services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

Naugatuck-Edward S. Korowotny, 76 passed away August 9, 2012 at his home surrounded by his loving family, after an extended illness. He is survived by his wife of 54 years,

Marilyn (Best) Korowotny. Ed was born January 23, 1936 in Waterbury, son of the late Stella (Zbikowski) and Alexander Korowotny. A lifelong resident of Naugatuck growing up in

the Union City section of town, he was a graduate of St. Hedwig’s School and Naugatuck High School, Class of 1953. He graduated from Kaynor Technical School, class of 1957. Ed

proudly served three years in the United States Marine Corps, stationed in Camp Lejeune, NC. After being discharged, he began his career working at Precision Methods and

Machines in 1960. He retired as foreman from Howard Engineering in 2001, after many years of service. Ed always enjoyed his work, and all the men that he worked with. He was a

member of Polish Falcons Nest 65 and the Naugatuck Elks Club and was an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman. He also enjoyed coaching his children on the baseball and softball

fields, and loved following the Chicago Bears and New York Yankees. His greatest joy was being surrounded by his children and grandchildren and their large circle of friends. Ed and

Marilyn enjoyed many fun vacations with their family and in later years with their friends. He was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Naugatuck.

In addition to his wife, Ed is also survived by his four beloved children and their spouses, Ed (and Mary) Korowotny, Lisa (and Tony) Rotella, Susan (and Carl) Lafevre and Jim (and

Maureen) Korowotny, and his cherished grandchildren, Molly, Emma, Erin, Meghan and James Korowotny, all of Naugatuck and Terilyn Esse, and her husband Todd of Fairfield, and

Ed Barbuto and his wife Eilish of Naugatuck who were just like his own children to him. He also leaves his brother in law, Jim Best and his wife Arline, five nephews, a niece and several

cousins.

The family would like to thank all of their friends for the tremendous support given them throughout Ed’s Illness. A special thanks to all of his doctors and their staffs, and also to the

Waterbury VNA nurses and aides for their excellent care. Ed always said he had a good life, good family and good friends. Semper Fi.

Earle R. Harris – Served with distinction in WW2

NAUGATUCK – Mr. Earle Richard Harris, age 85, of Naugatuck, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012, at Waterbury Hospital. He was the husband of Norma Jean (Adams) Harris.

Mr. Harris was born in Ballston Spa, N.Y., on Sept. 24, 1927, a son of the late Rodney and Winifred (Jackson) Harris. He was resident of Naugatuck for 58 years and was retired from the Uniroyal Inc. Footwear Division in Naugatuck where he had worked as a foremen for many years. He was also a former employee of the Uniroyal Inc. Synthetic Division, worked as a foreman at the former Brown Lumber Company in Naugatuck, and was an employee of the former Naugatuck Dairy Ice Cream Company with Augustine Barbiero. He was a chief of security for Gleason Security and Heritage Village in Southbury, and also worked as a greeter at Walmart and a driver for NAPA Auto Parts.

His hobbies included woodworking, the morning crossword puzzles, hunting and fishing, and being a great father and grandfather.

Mr. Harris was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps, having served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He flew aboard B-17 and B-29 aircraft as a Turret Gunner, Side Gunner and Bombardier and attained the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. Mr. Harris was the recipient of three Purple Hearts, the Distinguished Flying Cross, one Silver Star, one Bronze Star and the service Air Medal. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1946 in Naugatuck, the Military Order of the Purple Heart life member, the Air Force Association and the 11th Bombardment Group Association life member.

Mr. Harris will be remembered for his vise grip handshake, his witty humor and the softest heart that a man could have.

Besides his wife, Mr. Harris is survived by three sons: Timothy John Harris and his wife, Marcia, of Waterbury, Douglas James Harris and his wife, Mary, of Naugatuck, and Gregory Vincent Harris and his wife, Robyn, of Naugatuck; a daughter, Catherine Ann Harris of Naugatuck; seven grandchildren, Timothy J. Harris, Jr., Robert Lee Harris, Michele Ann (Harris) Litke, Michael Lee Harris, Brian Chauncey Stockton, Dustyn Jessica, Kyle Douglas J. and Rikki Rhiannon Harris; five great-grandchildren, Lauren Litke, Lindsay Litke, Jossalynn Harris, Danessa Harris and Mackenzee Harris; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Richard Paul Harris, two brothers, John Harris and Donald Harris, and a sister, Elnora Loya.

Graveside funeral services and burial with full military honors will be held on Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, at 1 p.m. at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville, N.Y. 12871. There are no calling hours. Victor A. Zollo Sr.
Worked at Sikorsky, Bronson

Victor Anthony Zollo, Sr., 94, of Beacon Falls, Connecticut and Winter Park, Florida died on September 29, 2012 at the Florida home of his son, Victor Anthony Zollo, Junior and devoted daughter-in-law, Jacquelynn Zollo. He passed away as he lived: with peaceful grace and dignity. Victor was born in Beacon Falls in 1917 to Albert and Vincenzina Cretella Zollo and is predeceased by his beloved wife of 66 years, Mary Virginia Weidenhamer Zollo.

Born in Beacon Falls, Victor was raised in a large family of ten siblings. During World War II, he proudly worked at Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation helping to manufacture the Corsair fighter jet. Following the war, Victor returned to Beacon Falls to work at the Homer D. Bronson Company for thirty-nine years. He loved horse racing, the University of Connecticut Girl’s Basketball Team and walking the hills of Beacon Falls, especially in the fall. Victor was a devout communicant of Saint Michael’s Roman Catholic Church in Beacon Falls. Victor moved to Florida four years ago. During that time, he was lovingly cared for by Jacquelynn as well as his special caretakers, Paul and Ruthie.

In addition to his son and daughter-in-law, Victor and Jacquelynn, Victor is survived by his daughter Madelyne and husband, George David Pope of Scituate, Massachusetts. He is also survived by four granddaughters: Catherine Mary and husband Benjamin Smith of Hingham Massachusetts, Theresa Ann Pope of New York City, Elizabeth Irene and husband Jeffrey Stomper of Evanston, Illinois and Madelyne Mary Zollo of New York City. Victor was the proud great-grandfather of Patrick Connor Smith and Nicholas Finn Smith. Victor also leaves his dear sister, May Cancellaro of Naugatuck, Connecticut, and his brother Richard Zollo of Port St. Lucie, Florida. In addition, Victor is survived by two sisters-in-law, Anna and Toni and the loving nieces and nephews of the Zollo Family as well as lifelong friends.

The funeral will be held on Thursday, October 4, 2012 at 9:15 a.m. from the Buckmiller Brothers Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Ave, Naugatuck to St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church in Beacon Falls honoring his request Victor will be escorted by his four granddaughters for a mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 5-7 p.m.

WATERBURY — Geraldine (McLean) Del Buono, 85, passed away on Monday, Oct. 8, 2012, at Paradigm Healthcare Center in Prospect. She was the widow of Ignazio Del Buono.

Mrs. Del Buono was born on Aug. 1, 1927, in Waterbury, a daughter of the late Oliver and Estelle (Woodworth) McLean. She loved to paint and loved bird watching and also feeding them. She also enjoyed doing puzzles and spending time with her family. She was a loving mother and grandmother and a very nurturing person.

She is survived by one daughter, Lynn Del Buono of Waterbury; a son, Stephen Del Buono of Southington; and her sister, Estelle Boisvert of Wolcott. She also leaves her three grandsons, Justin, Jeffrey and Jack. She was predeceased by several sisters and her brother, Oliver McLean.

A graveside service will be held noon Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, at All Saints Cemetery, 203 Spring Lake Road, Waterbury. Calling hours will be held at the Buckmiller Brothers Funeral Home, 26 Waterbury Road, Route 69, Prospect, on Wednesday morning from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Joseph W. Jarvis Yellow Freight retiree PLANO, Texas — Mr. Joseph W. Jarvis, age 73, of Plano, Texas, passed away on Friday, Oct. 12, 2012 at the Heritage Manor in Plano, Texas. He was the husband of Darleen Jarvis. Mr. Jarvis was born in Waterbury on Jan. 31,1939, a son of the late Violet Bellerive. He was retired from Yellow Freight, where he had worked in both Connecticut and Texas for many years. Besides his wife, Mr. Jarvis is survived by three sons, Don Jarvis of Cheshire, Tim Jarvis of Pennsylvania and Ed Jarvis of Ohio; two daughters, Sharon Bear of Pennsylvania and Margie Warren of Florida; one brother, Rick Bellerive of Watertown; one sister, Joan Rhodes of Windsor; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson and several nieces and nephews. Joe’s family would like to thank Joe Henney and Frances for their friendship through the years. Funeral services and interment were held in Plano, Texas.

Mrs. Emma (Gohring) Strolin, age 104, of Naugatuck, passed away quietly Monday October 22,2012 at Wolcott View Manor. She was the widow of Christian Strolin. Mrs. Strolin was born in Germany on April 9,1908. She was retired after having worked as a seamstress for many years and was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church in Bridgeport. She enjoyed spending time with her family and was an avid card and bingo player while she lived at Robert E. Hutt Congregate Housing in Naugatuck. Mrs. Strolin is survived by a daughter, Gertrude Stacoffe and her husband Robert of Ohio, three grandchildren, Christine Martin and her husband Jeff of Ohio, Sharyn Stacoffe of Massachusetts, formerly of Naugatuck and David Stacoffe and his wife Jody of Maryland and four great grandchildren. Whitefish, MT- Mr. John Halasik, Jr., age 91, formerly of Naugatuck passed away peacefully Friday, October 19, 2012. He was the widower of Doris (Boileau) Halasik. Mr. Halasik was born on February 15, 1921 in Naugatuck, son of the late John Halasik Sr. and Anna (Kostick) Halasik. After graduating from Naugatuck High School, he attended Bridgeport Trade School for three years. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy after WWII Pearl Harbor invasion and was stationed in Oahu until the end of the war. He worked as a local mail carrier for 45 years, retiring from the US Postal service in 1990. He also worked part time at Ferre-Forme Tool factory, his brother in laws business. He enjoyed cooking for friend and relatives, fishing at the family camp in Vermont, and, together with his wife, ballroom dancing with the Cha-Rum-Ba Club in Waterbury. Mr. Halasik was a member and Deacon Emeritus of the Congregational Church of Naugatuck. His charming smile and kind words will be well remembered. He is survived by his sister, Mary Ernst of Naugatuck; niece Nancy Ernst Lundgren (Robert) of West Glacier, MT and grandnieces, Maria and Anna; nephew Thomas Boileau (Nancy) of Middlebury and grand nephews Tom and Jason, and nephew David Rybinski (Kim) of Beacon Falls and grand nephews Michael and Daniel. He was predeceased by grand-niece, Heather Rybinski. A private graveside service with military honors was held at Grove Cemetery. Wolcott-Angeline (Lombardi) Smeraglia, 89, passed away on Thursday, October 26, 2012. She was the widow of Accursio (Gus) Smeraglia. Mrs. Smeraglia was born on May 22, 1923 in Waterbury a daughter of the late Eustachio and Nancy (Coia) Lombardi. She was retired from Butterfield in Naugatuck where she worked for many years. She was a great mom and grandmother and a good friend to all who knew her. She is survived by two daughters, Linda Neri of Cheshire and Joyce Trombley and her husband Michael of Wolcott one brother, Louis Lombardi of Bethlehem, PA, four grandchildren, Jennifer Maringola, Krista Ryan, Edward Hawthorne and Andrea Neri, two great grandchildren Nicholas and Lauren. She also leaves several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by four brothers, James, Joseph, Anthony and John Lombardi. The funeral will be held on Monday, October 29, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. at St. Leo the Great Church, 14 Bentwood Drive, Waterbury, everyone is asked to meet directly at the church. Mr. Bethke was born on June 21, 1934 in New Haven a son of the late Floyd and Myrtle (Wuertz) Bethke. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during the Korean War, assigned to a Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron and was a crew member of a B-24 Liberator. He retired from Pratt & Whittney where he worked as a Metal Smith for over 30 years. He was a member of the Elks and also a member of the American Legion in New Haven, Hamden and West Haven. Besides his loving wife he is survived by his son, Michael Bethke and his wife Dawn. He also leaves his granddaughter, MaKayla Bethke. Beacon Falls-Frank H. Russell, Jr., 81, passed away on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 in his home. He was the husband of Elsie Perry . Mr. Russell was born on April 15, 1931 in New Haven a son of the late Frank H. Sr. and Ruby Russell. He was retired from Homer D. Bronson Co. where he worked as a Plater for over 30 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and most of all spending time with his family. Besides his wife, he is also survived by one son, Robert H. Perry Sr. of Woodstock, his daughter in law, Michelle Perry of Ormond Beach, FL one step son, Robert H. Smith of Long Island, NY, three sisters, Sara Santore and her husband Ralph of New Hampshire, Joyce Vealano and her husband Robert of Beacon Falls and Rita Russell, two brothers, James Russell of Naugatuck and Charles Russell and his wife Carol of Beacon Falls. He also leaves four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter Tammy Perry. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at St. James Cemetery, Cross Street, Naugatuck. Naugatuck-Frances M. Sytnik, 85, passed away on November 1, 2012 at St. Mary’s Hospital. Frances was born on September 13, 1927 in Wilkes Barre, PA a daughter of the late Andrew H. and Susan (Morovich) Sytnik. She was retired from Uniroyal, Inc where she worked for many years. She was an avid bowler and traveler, she also enjoyed seeing Broadway Shows. She was a loving aunt to her nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She is survived by two sisters, Ann Davis of Damascus, MD and Rosemary Gruskiewicz of Naugatuck, she also leaves one brother, Andrew Sytnik of Naugatuck. She was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers, Cookie Doback, Irene Mullen, Henry Sytnik and Joseph Sytnik. Frances’ family would like to give special thanks to Glendale Healthcare Center for the wonderful care they gave. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at 2:30 p.m. at St. James Cemetery, Cross St, Naugatuck. Naugatuck-Casimiro Pereira, 89, passed away on Monday, October 29, 2012 at Glendale Healthcare Center surrounded by loving family and care givers. He was the husband of Laura (Ruela) Pereira. Mr. Pereira was born on February 11, 1923 in Pinheiro da Bemposta, Portugal, a son of the late Domingos da Silva and Eugenia Marques. He came to the USA in 1957 with his young family leaving behind his bakery business, his family and friends. He was retired from Uniroyal Inc. where he worked as a Lab Technician for many years. He was a member of the Portuguese Club and an active member of the Our Lady of Fatima Church Community. Casimiro’s main passion was spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren at home, at the beach or visiting family in his beloved Portugal. His other favorite past time was fishing and hunting with his close friends. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Edwin Pereira and his wife Anne of Royal Oak, Michigan, Delfim Pereira of Miami, FL, one daughter, Maria Pereira Roman and her husband Victor of Naugatuck, one sister, Deolinda Silveira of Lisbon, Portugal, five grandchildren, Robert Pereira and his wife Sara, Vanessa and Daniel Pereira, Cristian and Amanda Roman and two great-granddaughters, Luciana Pereira and Sophie Roman. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their families. He was predeceased by two sisters, Olivia Pereira Cabral and Maria Pereira da Silva and two brothers, Manuel Pereira da Silva and Antonio Pereira da Silva. The funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 2071 Baldwin St, Waterbury. Family and friends are asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will be at St. James Cemetery. Betty Joyce Goewey Wife, mother, grandmother PROSPECT – Betty Joyce (Hatch) Goewey, 83, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, at Waterbury Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Eldred S. Goewey. Betty Joyce was born on Dec. 20, 1928, in West Haven and was the daughter of the late Manfred W. and Linda C. Hatch. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 60 in Danbury and the SNET Pioneers. Betty loved to knit, travel and spend time with her loving family. She is survived by two sons, Michael and his wife, Helen, and Manfred, all of Prospect; two daughters, Mary of Prospect and Linda and her husband, Donald Nadeau, of Williamstown, Vt.; one brother, Donald J. Hatch of Falls Village; four grandchildren, William and Michelle Goewey, Necia (Nadeau) Gorton and Anthony Nadeau; and five great-grandchildren. Besides her husband and parents, Betty was predeceased by a daughter, Meg Goewey, a brother, Robert A. Hatch, and a granddaughter, Shannon Nadeau. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday morning, Nov. 6, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the Buckmiller Brothers Funeral Home, 26 Waterbury Road, Route 69, Prospect. Family and friends may call at the funeral home from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
