Aurea Tavares Worked at Uniroyal, Naugatuck Glass WATERBURY — Aurea DeJesus Lopes Tavares, 84, passed away on Thursday, April 3, 2014, at Waterbury Hospital. She was the wife of the late Joao A. Tavares. She was predeceased by two brothers, Leonel Alves and Antonio Rodrigues, and her nephew, John Alves. Mrs. Tavares was born on Jan. 7, 1930, in Ferreiroz do Dao, Portugal, the daughter of the late Jose Lopes Alves and Levinia DeJesus Alves. She worked for Uniroyal Chemical and Naugatuck Glass for many years before retiring. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Waterbury and the Portuguese Club Ladies Auxiliary. She is survived by a brother, Joaquim Lopes Alves of Portugal; and several nephews and nieces, Jose A. Lopes of Danbury, Amandio N. Alves of Naugatuck, Jose N. Alves of Watertown, Lucilia Alves of Clermont, Fla., Luciano A. Lopes of Leesburg, Fla., Teresa M. Lopes of Naugatuck, Maria H. Alves of Guilford, Isabel Marques of Clermont, Fla., Antonio A. Lopes of Apopka, Fla., and Fernando Rodrigues of Portugal. A special thank you for the wonderful care that Aurea received at Waterbury Hospital. The funeral service for Mrs. Tavares will be held on Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 2071 Baldwin St., Waterbury. Family and friends are asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery. Naugatuck-Michael J. Garnett, 54, passed away on Friday, March 4, 2014 at St. Mary’s Hospital. He was the husband of Teresa (Etrio) Garnett. Mr. Garnett was born on February 16, 1960 in Hartford, a son of Patricia Garnett. He served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps and worked as an information technician for a software company. He was a Eucharistic Minister and a member of Knights of Columbus and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Besides his wife, Teresa he is also survived by his three daughters, Belinda Garnett, Bianca Garnett, and Holly Garnett. He also leaves his two loving granddaughters, Adrianna Wutke, and Arabella Garnett. The funeral will be held on Thursday, April 10, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Vincent Ferrer Church, 1006 New Haven Rd, Naugatuck. Everyone is asked to meet directly at the church. Timothy Sweeney

Prospect-Timothy Joseph Sweeney Jr, (Skim as his children called him) passed away peacefully on April 24, 2014 at Apple Rehab in Watertown after his courageous, but short battle with cancer. He was the husband of Anne Patricia (Burns) Sweeney, who he was married to for 46 years. Tim was born in Waterbury on November 13, 1943 . He was the son of the late Alice (McGrath) and Timothy Sweeney of Waterbury. He was a graduate of St Francis Xavier School, Wilby High School and received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of New Haven in 1976. He was employed by Metro North Railroad where he retired after 42 years as a railroad locomotive engineer. He was an Air Force Veteran as a radar operator and was in the Air Force for 4 years during the Vietnam era. He was a member of the VFW, The DAV and Connecticut Society of Geneologists. He was a parishioner at St Anthony’s Parish in Prospect, where he lived for 39 years. He also was awarded a plaque from Mayor Bob as a hometown hero for saving the life of an elderly woman from a burning car, which he was always proud of. He also received awards from Kiwanis club and the Masons for his heroism. Besides his wife he also leaves his daughter Diane Decker and her husband Ken of Southington, his son Bart and his wife Jennifer Sweeney of Cheshire, and his son John and his wife Allison of Prospect. He also leaves 8 grandchildren, Kerry and KJ Decker, Kaylin and Rylee Sweeney and Julia, Timothy, Alexa and Shelby Sweeney. He was also pre-deceased by his favorite dog “Sage” who was waiting for him in heaven. He also leaves his brother Michael and his sister in law Carolyn Sweeney of Madison and his sister Rosemary and his brother-in-law Eddie Gilette of Lansdale Pennsylvania. He was an avid reader on many subjects, enjoyed genealogy and was a GREAT story teller-especially to his grandchildren. He was always the life of the party. Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 28, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church, 4 Union City Rd, Prospect. Friends are asked to meet directly at the church. Burial with full military honors will be in Prospect Cemetery. Mrs. Pocsi was born on February 8, 1929 in Winbur, PA. She is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Davis and her husband Ronald of West Palm, FL, and Karen Klancic and her husband Leonard of Beacon Falls, one son, Kenneth Pocsi and his wife Stephanie of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, two sisters, Florence Graham of Marblehead, MA and Emily Ellison of VA. She will also be missed by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters. Naugatuck-John (Jack) E. White, 77, passed away on Monday, April 28, 2014 at Waterbury Hospital with his loving family by his side. He was the husband of Harriett (Drummer) White. Mr. White was born on January 2, 1937 a son of the late William White and Johanna (Beach) White. Besides his wife of 53 years he is also survived by his two daughters, Cynthia Brown and her husband Jeffrey of Seymour, and, Alicia Moreland and her husband Robert of Seymour. He will also be missed by his four grandchildren; Michael, Eric, Nathanael and Abigail, several nieces and nephews and also great nieces and great nephews. Services will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 49 Bowman Drive, Naugatuck. Everyone is asked to meet directly at the Hall. She was the wife of the late Clifford Gagnon. Mrs. Gagnon was born on April 20, 1926 in Eagle Lake, ME a daughter of the late Joseph Perreault and Evelyn (Pelletier) Perreault. She was retired from Telflex, Inc. where she worked for many years. She is survived by four daughters, Nancy Norton, Joyce Knapp, Dawn Gagnon and, Darlene Gauthier, two sons, William Gagnon, Allen Gagnon, five sisters, Jeanne Boutote, Juliette LaChance, Madeline Nolan, Elaine Marin, and, Doris Pelletier, one brother Paul Perreault. She will also be missed by her eleven grandchildren, five great grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. Linda L. Scully Retired school library aide PROSPECT — Linda L. Scully, 70, passed away on Saturday, May 3, 2014, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Thomas J. Scully. Mrs. Scully was born on March 26, 1944, in Waterbury, a daughter of the late Louis and Ethel (Morgan) Cocchiola. She was retired from the Prospect school system where she worked as a librarian aide at Algonquin School. She is survived by her daughter, Shannon Legassey and her husband, Jeremy, of Terryville, and their sons, Jeremy Jr. and Aiden. She also leaves behind two sisters, Lois Burns and Sally Bertrand, and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Scully’s family would like to thank Carla and Pam from the VNA and the staff of VITAS for the wonderful care that they provided. NAUGATUCK — Robert J. Filippone, 71, passed away on Saturday, May 10, 2014, at Saint Mary’s Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Maria (Magalhaes) Filippone. Robert was born on Aug. 25, 1942, in Waterbury, the son of the late Rocco and Jane (Gworek) Filippone. A graduate of Croft High School and the Emporia State University in Kansas, Bob had a long and successful career as an accountant. He was the owner of Filippone Associates accounting firm. Prior to opening his own firm, he was a senior accountant at Peat Marwick Mitchell in addition to Scoville Manufacturing and Elf Aquitaine. He was a member of the Pacer’s Car Club, Naugatuck Elks Lodge 967, Waterbury Portuguese Sport Club and Our Lady of Fatima Church. Besides his wife, Maria, he is survived by his sons, Robert M. Filippone and his wife, Amanda, of Middlebury, Michael V. Filippone and his wife, Lisa, of Prospect, David R. Filippone and his wife, Diane, of Newington, and Paul A. Ribeiro and his wife, Gina, of Wilton. He will also be missed by his grandchildren, Jessica, Hailey, Cora Blue, Victoria, Franklin, Bella, Jackson and Isabella, as well as his great-grandson, Ryan, and his goddaughter, Taylor. He also leaves an extended family that includes many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends. Bob enjoyed traveling with his wife and friends and most of all found great joy in spending time with his children and grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by all who loved him. MIDDLEBURY – Carol (Bradshaw) Light, 81, passed away on Friday, May 9, 2014 at Middlebury Convalescent Home, surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late George H. Light. Mrs. Light was born on July 23, 1932 in Naugatuck, the daughter of the late Thomas P. and Katherine (Garrick) Bradshaw. She was a registered nurse for American Cyanamid (now Cytec) for 35 years. Carol is survived by her step-daughter, Yvonne Thompson, and her husband, Robert, of Prospect; her granddaughters, Yvonne Slowik and her husband, Rick, and Patricia Magrin, of Cheshire; and her grandson, Fran Thompson, of Waterbury. She will also be missed by her three great-grandchildren, Hayley, Erica and Ricky. She was predeceased by her brother, Thomas Bradshaw. Prospect, CT-Louisa Cappello Cornell (71), beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away on Saturday, May 10 after a brief illness at St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury Connecticut. She was surrounded by her loving family. Louisa was born on September 3, 1942 in New York City, along with her sister, the late Maria Cappello. The twins were daughters to Rosario and Grace (Volpi) Cappello. She is a graduate of Immaculata High School in New York City. At the age of 24 she married Robert Cornell and the couple settled in Naugatuck, CT where she raised three children and began a 20-year career at Naugatuck Savings Bank. She was a member of the Junior Women’s Club in Naugatuck where she met dear friends who were with her throughout the rest of her life. Besides her husband Robert, she is survived by her daughters, Christine Ieronimo and Leanne Cornell, her son John Cornell, her son-in-law of Michael Ieronimo, her daughter-in-law Deborah Webster-Cornell and her six grandchildren, Jack, Alex, Diana, Anna Grace, Charlotte and Eva. Among other things, Louisa enjoyed lunch with her friends, weekends at the beach in Rhode Island and shopping for her family, but nothing brought her more joy than spending time with her children and grandchildren, who all adored their GaGa and MeMa. Her family would like to offer a special thank you to the nurses, doctors and staff at St. Mary’s Hospital CCU, who were caring, heartfelt and treated Louisa with the loving care she rightfully deserved. The funeral will be held on Friday, May 16, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church, 4 Union City Rd, Prospect. Everyone is asked to meet directly at the church. Waterbury, – Anthony Battistrada, 95, passed away peacefully at St. Mary’s Hospital on May 8, 2014. Mr. Battistrada was born on June 21, 1918 in Waterbury, a son of the late Vincent and Agnes (Tiso) Battistrada. He was a longtime resident of Waterbury and attended Leavenworth High School. He served in the Army in England during WWII and in the Normandy Invasion. As a barber by trade, he owned and operated several barber shops in Waterbury, and in his later life worked in maintenance for the Thomaston and Watertown Post Offices. Our beloved uncle was an avid story teller who enriched our lives with his many serious and humorous stories. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Helen Battistrada of Brooksville, FL, two nephews, Frank Testa, and James Battistrada, and two nieces, Diana Place, and, Sylvia LaMadeleina. He will also be missed by several great nieces and nephews and also, great-great nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Camille Testa and two brothers, Sylvio and John Battistrada. Funeral services and burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Waterbury-Elaine Blanche Purdy, 84, passed away on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at St. Mary’s Hospital with her family by her side. Elaine was born on November 19, 1929 in Waterbury a daughter of the late Ray Purdy and Exzilda (Blanchard) Purdy. Elaine graduated from Catholic High and received a scholarship to Notre Dame College on Staten Island and then coming back to New Britain Teachers College to finish her education. She taught overseas in Japan and England and also lived and taught in Oxnard, CA. She moved back home to the Waterbury area and was a Waterbury school teacher for many years. She traveled extensively throughout her life. She loved sports and was an excellent golfer and played tennis, softball and skiing. She also enjoyed playing bridge and scrabble with her friends. She loved all of her family and friends and spending time with them was very important to her. She is survived by her two sisters, Jane C. Fowler, and Donna Marlak of Prospect, her nieces and nephews, Susan Fowler and her husband Victor Stanwick of Staten Island, Thomas Fowler and his girlfriend Joy Marty of Nevada, Jan DeCavage and her boyfriend Stan Popowski of Prospect, Mark Fowler of New Hampshire, William Fowler of Prospect and his wife Andra, David Marlak of Prospect, Tanya Sage and her husband Rick of Prospect, She will also be missed by her grand nieces and nephews, Tony Marlak, Sara Marlak, Jacquelyn O’Keefe, Rachel DeCavage, Suzanne Sebastian, Ryan Fowler, Brett Fowler, Devin Fowler, also, her great grand- niece, Alaina O’Keefe and her great grand nephews, Anthony Jr and Cayden. The funeral will be held on Monday, May 19, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church, 4 Union City Road, Prospect. Calling hours will be at the church preceding the mass at 9:30 am. Beacon Falls – Frank “Rinky” DelVecchio, 92, passed away after a brief illness on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at Beacon Brook Healthcare in Naugatuck. He was the husband of the late Pauline (Hodio) DelVecchio for 66 years. Frank was born on October 3, 1921 in Beacon Falls a son of the late Anthony and Josephine (Esposito) DelVecchio. Frank was a WWII Army veteran and a survivor of the first wave attack on Omaha Beach on D Day and also two other campaigns. He was retired from the Town of Beacon Falls where he worked as Street Superintendent for over 50 years. He was appointed Special Cop and Tree Warden by the Town of Beacon Falls for several years. He was also a member of the VFW. He was a volunteer with the Beacon Hose Company #1 for over 60 years. He was an officer with Beacon Hose for 20 years and Fire Chief from 1976 to 1981. He is survived by his daughter, Paula Balanda of Beacon Falls, one son, Frank D. DelVeccho and his wife Kate of Middlebury, one sister, Jean DiClementi and her husband Domenic, one granddaughter, Amy Karpovich and two grandsons, Frank DelVecchio Jr. and his wife Shawna of Seymour, and Antonio DelVecchio of Maine. He will also be missed by his great-grandchildren, Mason and Jaxon Karpovich, Angelina and Gabriella DelVecchio as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife he was also predeceased by a grandson, David Balanda, one sister, Josephine Fuoco and three brothers, Albert, Anthony, and Pat DelVecchio. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, May 19, 2014 at 10 AM at St Michael’s Church, 25 Maple Avenue, Beacon Falls. Friends are asked to please meet directly at the church at 9:45 AM. Harwinton-James R. Cross, 55, passed away unexpectedly on May 10, 2014. Jim was born on September 8, 1958 in Waterbury, a son of Ralph and Edinna (Klies) Cross. He was a tool and die maker and in a family owned construction company. He was very accomplished in both fields. James is survived by his parents and his brother Ralph H. Cross. He is also survived by two aunts, Jacqueline Klies and Heidi Klies and six cousins, Jason Goldberg, Chris Goldberg, Aaron Goldberg, Sean Welch, Frederick Klies, Jr., and Eric Klies. He was predeceased by his fiancé Lisa Jannetty and his uncle Frederick Klies, Sr. James had a wonderful sense of humor. He was the one that made everyone laugh. He will be sorely missed. The funeral service for Mr. Cross will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Church, 1 East Main Street, Thomaston. Everyone is asked to meet directly at the church. Willie “Bill” Morin 1929-2014 CHESHIRE, Conn. – Willie “Bill” Morin, 84, passed away on May 7, 2014, in Cheshire, Conn. He was born in Brassua, Maine, on June 16, 1929, the son of Lucien and Yvonne (Lamontagne) Morin. He served in the Army in the Korean war, and in Germany in the field artillery. He was employed by Canadian Pacific Railroad in Maine. He lived in Waterbury, Conn., for many years and was employed as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of the American Legion in Oakville, Conn., and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8075 in Prospect, Conn. He was predeceased by his parents; his brothers, Walter Morin and Lloyd Morin; a niece, Suzanne (Morin) Saragosa, and her son, a great-nephew, Jeremy Saragosa. He is survived by his older brother, Rene Morin, and his wife, Huguette, and his sister-in-law, Frances Morin, of Jackman, Maine; nieces and nephew, Linda Conrad and husband Dale, Diane St. Hilaire and husband Don, Karen Moore and husband Harold, and David Morin, all from Jackman; and great-nieces and great-nephews. He will also be remembered fondly by the Brooks family in Connecticut. He will be greatly missed by all. A graveside celebration of his life at 11 a.m. Friday, June 6, at St. Anthony’s Cemetery on Heald Stream Road in Jackman, with the Rev. Kevin Martin officiating. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a memorial contribution, to St. Anthony’s Parish, P.O. Box 457, Greenville, ME 04441; or a charity of their choice . He was the husband of the late Anne (Marus) Sydoriak. Mr. Sydoriak was born on May 16, 1920 in Waterbury, a son of the late Michael and Rose (Hyteriak) Sydoriak. He was retired from the Waterbury school system, where he spent his career teaching at various schools throughout the city. Mr. Sydoriak is survived by his son, Peter Jr. and his wife Sandra, of California and his brother, Michael and his wife, Dorothy, of Naugatuck. He will also be missed by his four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, Roseanne Pinto, his brother, John Sydoriak, and his sister, Stella Semenkovich. His family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Cheshire House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Waterbury, for their care and compassion during his stay. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Buckmiller Brothers Funeral Home, 26 Waterbury Rd, Rte. 69, Prospect. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday morning from 10:00 a.m. until the start of the service.

Francis L. Patt Retired Uniroyal Chemical electrician NAUGATUCK — Francis L. Patt, 89, passed away on Saturday, May 24, 2014, at VITAS at Saint Mary’s Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Joan (Vozar) Patt. Mr. Patt was born on Nov. 29, 1924 in Antrim, Pa., the son of the late Leo and Mahala (Smith) Patt. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was a retired electrician at Uniroyal Chemical. Mr. Patt was an avid golfer, frequenting all the local links; additionally he was a private pilot and president of the Sigma Six Flying Club. He was also a member of the local Elks lodge. Mr. Patt is survived by his two daughters, Francine DePinho and her husband Norton, of Baldwin, Md. and Lynda Newell and her husband Brian, of Naugatuck. He also leaves behind five grandchildren, Melissa Merritt, Nicole Riley, Keith DePinho, Jeffrey DePinho, Emma Newell and four great-grandchildren. The funeral for Mr. Patt will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 318 Church St., Naugatuck. Friends are asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery. The Buckmiller Brothers Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Ave., Naugatuck is in charge of arrangements.

Bethany – Tyler S. Rosenberg, age 19, beloved son of Daniel and Lois Rosenberg, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, May 21st, 2014. Tyler was a recent graduate of Amity High School. He was an avid bass guitar player, and will be remembered by all for his love of music. He will also be remembered for his easy going personality, his wit, sense of humor, and for the love of his dog Rudy. Tyler was known to all for his sensitivity and his very kind and unassuming nature; he never judged but took things at face value. He was fun loving and lived life to the fullest; he had a joyful spirit that touched everyone he met. His kindness and manner are remembered by all who knew him. He was a true friend to all. Besides his parents, he is survived by his older brother, Colin Rosenberg, his grandparents, George and Felice Rosenberg, his aunts and uncles, Anthony and Charline Shaw, David and Alice Droller, Larry and Susan Rosenberg, and Bob and Gwen Rosenberg, as well as many cousins. He will also be missed by his girlfriend, Miranda Curnane, who was the love of his life. Services will be held at the Buckmiller Brothers Funeral Home, 26 Waterbury Rd, Rte. 69, Prospect on Saturday May 31st at 2:00 p.m. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Naugatuck – John G. Lengyel, 94, passed away on Tuesday, May 27, 2014, at Glendale Center, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Rose (Kosko) Lengyel. Mr. Lengyel was born on May 24, 1920 in Naugatuck, a son of the late Stephen and Mary (Tresco) Lengyel. He was a W.W. II veteran of the U.S. Navy and was retired from Uniroyal Chemical, where he worked for 42 years. Mr. Lengyel is survived by his sons, John Lengyel and his wife, Dolly of Naugatuck and Donald Lengyel, and his wife Ann Marie of Beacon Falls, and his daughter, Rosemary Boisvert, and her husband, Tom of Naugatuck. He will also be missed by his seven grandchildren and his twelve great grandchildren. He was predeceased by seven sisters, Rose “Edie”, Mary, Elizabeth, Ethel, Irene, Theresa, and Joanna, and one brother, Stephen. Services and burial, with full military honors, for Mr. Lengyel will be held on Friday, May 30, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. at St. James Cemetery, Cross Street, Naugatuck. Mary was born on June 3, 1923 in Waterbury a daughter of the late Frank and Mary (Daugerdas) DelRusso. She is survived by her son, Richard DelRusso of East Lyme, a sister, Helen Daugerdas, and her grandson, Richard W. DelRusso. She will also be missed by her great-grandson, Brennan DelRusso, a niece, Nancy Pierpont, and a nephew, John Daugerdas. The funeral will be held on Friday, May 30, 2014, leaving from Buckmiller Brothers Funeral Home, 26 Waterbury Rd., Rte. 69, Prospect at 9:30 a.m. to St. Anthony’s Church, 4 Union City Rd, Prospect for a mass at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in Prospect Cemetery.
